How can I customize when my Abandoned Checkout notification emails are sent out?

Where to change abandoned checkout send timing in Shopify, and what UpOrder controls.

UpOrder does not decide when Shopify sends abandoned checkout emails. UpOrder lets you customize the design and content of the Abandoned checkout notification template, but Shopify controls the send timing, audience, automation status, and delivery rules.

If you want to change how long Shopify waits before sending an abandoned checkout email, update the abandoned checkout settings or automation in Shopify.

Where to change the send timing

Shopify has been moving abandoned checkout recovery into the Shopify Messaging automation experience. The exact place you edit timing can depend on whether your store is using Shopify's newer abandoned checkout automation or the older legacy abandoned checkout experience.

If your store uses the newer Shopify Messaging automation

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Apps > Messaging.

  2. Click Automations.

  3. Select your Abandoned checkout automation.

  4. Click Edit, then edit the workflow in Shopify Flow.

  5. Adjust the wait time or workflow rules, then turn the workflow back on when you are finished.

Shopify notes that the newer abandoned checkout automation gives you more control over when abandoned checkout emails are sent and who receives them. Shopify also notes that opting in to the newer abandoned checkout automation is permanent, so review Shopify's guidance before switching from the legacy experience.

If your store still uses Shopify's legacy abandoned checkout experience

Some stores can still manage abandoned checkout recovery from the legacy Shopify abandoned checkout settings until Shopify removes that experience. In Shopify's current legacy guidance, the automatic email settings are managed from Shopify Messaging:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Apps > Messaging.

  2. Click Automations.

  3. Find Abandoned checkout emails by Shopify.

  4. Open the actions menu, then click Edit settings.

  5. In Send after, choose how much time should pass before Shopify sends the abandoned checkout email.

  6. Click Save.

Shopify also says some stores can continue using the existing abandoned checkout email in Settings > Checkout until that legacy experience is removed. If your Shopify admin still shows abandoned checkout timing under Checkout settings, use the setting Shopify gives you there.

What to change in UpOrder

Use UpOrder when you want to change the look or content of the abandoned checkout email template itself.

  1. Open your template set in UpOrder.

  2. Select the Abandoned checkout notification template.

  3. Update the design, copy, discounts, product recommendations, or other content.

  4. Save your changes.

  5. Publish or update the template in Shopify when you are ready for the live abandoned checkout email to use the UpOrder version.

Changing the template in UpOrder does not change Shopify's send delay. Publishing from UpOrder updates the email template content, not the automation timing.

Important Shopify sending notes

  • Shopify's abandoned checkout recovery applies to the Online Store and Buy Button sales channels. Shopify says abandoned checkouts from POS, Shop, or third-party sales channels do not receive the abandoned checkout automation.

  • The newer abandoned checkout automation sends only to customers subscribed to email marketing by default, but Shopify says you can change the To field to All customers in the email editor.

  • Shopify might not send a recovery email if the customer completes a purchase before the wait time ends, the checkout items are no longer available, the checkout is free, or another Shopify delivery rule prevents the email from sending.

  • Abandoned checkout is different from abandoned cart or abandoned product browse automation. UpOrder customizes Shopify's supported notification templates; broader cart or browse abandonment flows are managed in Shopify Messaging or another marketing automation tool.
