What are conditional discounts?

Learn how to show different discount offers based on order value.

Conditional discounts let you show different next-purchase discount offers based on the value of the customer's order.

They are useful when you want to reward higher-value orders with a stronger offer, give smaller orders a standard offer, or avoid showing a discount when an order does not meet the threshold you have chosen.

For example, you might set up rules like this:

  • Orders under $50: no discount

  • Orders from $50 to $99.99: 10% off the next order

  • Orders of $100 or more: $20 off, free shipping, or a stronger offer

The discount shown in the email is based on the order data available for that notification. This lets one email template support multiple offers without needing to create separate templates for each order-value segment.

Before you start

If you do not see the newer discount options in the builder, enable the Enhanced Discount Component from Feature Management first. You can follow the setup steps here: How To Enable Advanced Discount Components.

How to use conditional discounts

  1. Open the template set you want to edit.

  2. Open the notification template where you want the discount to appear.

  3. Add a Discount component, or click an existing Discount component in the template.

  4. Use the discount settings on the right side of the builder to configure your offer and any order-value conditions.

  5. Review the template and repeat this setup for any other notification templates where you want the same conditional offer to appear.

Discount settings are template-specific, so changing the discount in one notification template does not automatically add that same offer to every other notification template.

A note about discount combinations

The enhanced discount component can support more flexible offers, including offers that use more than one discount benefit. Whether a discount can combine with other discounts at checkout depends on the discount classes and combination settings supported by Shopify. You will need to publish your updated templates to Shopify before these changes are reflected in your live notification emails.
